  &lt;p&gt;The Johnson Laboratory specializes in understanding how bacteria process toxic metals such as copper. Recently, we have found a novel compound that synergizes with copper to act in an antimicrobial capacity in culture, and reduce bacterial burden in the animal models. With support from Tech Launch Arizona, we have begun derivatizing this compound to make more novel therapeutics with preliminary success.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

  &lt;p&gt;My research interest in development of prevention and treatment options for foodborne pathogens involves looking for alternative treatment and prevention methods from traditional antibiotics due to resistance for those pathogens that are traditionally treated with antibiotics like Salmonella and Campylobacter. While looking for alternative treatment options for foodborne pathogens like Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) that cannot be treated with antibiotics. Ultimately our goal is to find a therapeutic/preventative agent(s) that would effectively work as a treatment against the different foodborne pathogens, while also improving preventative methods in agriculture over the traditional method of placing large amounts of antimicrobials in animal feed.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
